Pachaillariy is an indigenous-led NGO dedicated to restoring degraded lands in the Cusco region of Peru and empowering indigenous communities in leadership and food security. This project aims to support the rural communities of Urinsaya Ccollana and Huayllaccocha (officially designated “Comunidades Campesinas” by the Peruvian government) in restoring the degraded sites of Huerta Huaycco (196 hectares) and Chimpa Orcco (208 hectares) in the Anta district, Cusco Province, Peru. Both sites hold indigenous land status. These two sites, located west and east of the village of Huarocondo and at a higher altitude than the village, are essential for the people of the valley, as they provide freshwater for approximately 721 families (421 in Huarocondo and 300 in Huayllaccocha). Their degraded condition poses a risk to downstream communities due to potential erosion and landslides, as well as freshwater depletion. Both sites hold cultural and natural significance for the communities, as ancestral Andean concepts such as Ayni (reciprocity and mutualism within a community) and Minka (communal work for a greater cause) have been preserved over generations and remain important today. According to Pachaillariy, based on ancestral teachings, community members continue to perform rituals and offerings of gratitude to the Apus (sacred mountains) and Pachamama (Mother Earth) before beginning tasks, during harvests, and on other significant occasions, following the Inca agricultural calendar. Beyond restoring these sites with native flora (10 different species), the project aims to empower the indigenous communities of Urinsaya Ccollana and Huayllaccocha by providing training in agricultural techniques, restoration and monitoring methods, indigenous leadership strategies, food security and independence, as well as entrepreneurship development.
